So going against everything I practiced as a runner, I decided to run with my husband's iPod. It was during that run that I realized what a powerful influence music can have on a workout, and more importantly on my races. I was able to throw on some headphones and focus on the music/lyrics/beat rather than the pain my body was going through and the negative thoughts that were consuming my run.
Don't get me wrong, I still LOVE and need those silent runs. But on those days when I can feel those negative thoughts creeping in I grasp my iPod and head out. With music I've been able to reduce my race times by 15 to 30 seconds per mile. I know much of that has come from training, but I have to give a little credit to those songs that really get me moving.
Sometimes we all just need a little pick-me-up to break down our running walls and music can be just that. I've found these ten songs to be some of my favorites whether I'm on the treadmill, running a short power run, or running a marathon. Hope you like them enough to try them out on your next run. Happy Listening!
